(Half-Chinese American) Barry McGee is making quite the splash with his recent Adidas Y1 Huf design.
No no - not because he's using his artistic prowess and street cred to sell $250 sneakers, but because of the supposedly 'racist' image on the shoes' tongue, in-sole and packaging.
Meet Ray Fong, Barry's portrait of himself as a child:
Wooster Collective has a great email from Giant Robot's Erik Nakamura on how ridiculous the negative hype is surrounding this 'issue'. Ridiculous, yes. But by now we should really be used to crazy PC-obsessed people freaking out about such things.
Yay for the publicity for Barry McGee! He's done so much amazing work that I like seeing his name splashed across the MSM and various blogging devices.
I won't be buying these shoes and a lot of that has to do with not being able to afford them, but some of it has to do with me not being sure I could carry them off. I just don't think that who I am really fits in with the point of Ray Fong - but should Barry make a 'Kay McFay' (portrait of the happykatie blogger as a pasty Irish and awkward teenager) character I would wear them proudly.
