I guess I've never really thought about it, but we are seriously lacking the Wonders of the World category. They're all gone!
The list that we know today was compiled in the Middle Ages—by which time many of the sites were no longer in existence. Since the list came mostly from ancient Greek writings, only sites that would have been known and visited by the ancient Greeks were included. (from Wikipedia)
For all those concerned, there is an international vote for the New 7 Wonders of the World. A lot of the candidates aren't really any sort of 'wonder' to me, per se. I mean, some dude drew out the plans, got some money and hired a construction crew to build the thing. But others... well they still have a bit of magic (and write in candidates are allowed too!).
