Newsweek posted a short article on the emerging world of vegan snackfood -- interesting, although they really don't mention too many specific brands.
"People need fun food," Kellner says. "You can't work all day; you've got to play a little bit, too. That goes for everybody, vegans and nonvegans alike."
Now that I'm a lot more sensitive to vegan dietary needs, it's been cool seeing just how many options there are out there for non-animal consumers. Flipping through cookbooks and searching online, there are a TON of tricks for working your way around dairy products in recipes and of course a growing variety of vegan replacements for sale.
Some things I've learned:
- Carob is a beautiful substitute for chocolate
- Use soy yogurt / ground flaxseed / bananas to replace eggs in certain baking recipes (which one depends on what kind of baking recipe)
- Soy milk is completely rocking and beats out regular milk in just about anything (except pudding -- soy milk doesn't do the trick at all... much to my dismay)
- Vegan butter tastes more butter-y than the regular cow derived stuff
